Book Review: The Dorm Room Diet Planner

Thursday, August 30th, 2007

A companion to her bestseller “The Dorm Room Diet,” Daphne Oz's “Planner” is a more interactive guide to maintaining healthy eating habits. Oz, who is still a student herself, identifies many of the different ways that people might fall back into bad habits, including snacking at parties and comfort eating with new friends.

Summer has you Borders-crossing

Thursday, August 30th, 2007

Yawning myself awake at 3 p.m., I stretched underneath the covers and half-consciously catalogued my chores for the rest of the day: find some sandwich combination that goes with salmon cream cheese, finish my short story about the water buffalo with the nose job, drive to La Encantada and walk around like I'm rich, continue to comprehend the implications of “Flatland” and the fourth dimension, hopefully be able to visualize it, call the Motor Vehicle Department and masturbate.

Looking for something fun and interesting to do this weekend? A movie at The Loft Cinema may be what you're waiting for.

Few bands are fortunate enough to have legions of fans right from the beginning.

Aaron Gillespie, drummer/vocalist of the scream-friendly band Underoath, had that advantage when starting a new group, The Almost, in 2005. While Underoath fans were already interested in hearing The Almost's music, promotion was still an issue.

While pop-punk bands like Fall Out Boy and Good Charlotte are popular on radio and TV, it's hard to find bands that provoke much hatred. It's as if for every such band, there are thousands of music snobs ready to point out flaws in each of its songs.

The Starting Line is one band constantly barraged with the pop-punk label.

• Celebrate Tucson's Birthday - With Living Historia - This event seems like the coolest possible party you can have without alcohol, which still isn't that cool. But it does have food, plus Capoeria, karaoke, origami-folding and a Winterguard performance.

Movie Review: I'm McLovin' It

Friday, August 24th, 2007

Every once in a while, a movie comes along that is so stunning, so powerful, so breathtaking that it seems destined for an eternal place in cinematic history.

I'm talking, of course, about “Superbad.”

Except, instead of “stunning” I mean “foul,” instead of “powerful” I mean “brutally honest” and instead of “breathtaking,” I mean “hysterical.

Hit or miss - a catchphrase Seattle indie-rock favorites Minus the Bear know all too well.

The sometimes-prog-rock, sometimes-dance-pop band's anthology of albums and EPs, along with a consistent touring schedule, have kept them on the map since 2002 when its debut LP, Highly Refined Pirates, became a staple at scenester dance parties.

It's a cab race!

Friday, August 24th, 2007

Being stranded around campus after drinking a few too many beers can be brutal. What's worse is the looming possibility of getting a DUI when you decide to drive home after a celebratory first week back at school.

So, why not take a cab? Besides the stereotype that they are all dirty and driven by creepy old men, they are handy for carpooling and making sure you don't tarnish your (hopefully) flawless police record.

Fresh Pulp

Summer is typically a dry time for comics. Publishers tend to focus their attention on events like Comic-Con, a convention for fans, and summer movies. The result: original comic releases are few and far between. After summer theater blockbusters like “Spider-Man 3,” “Silver Surfer,” “Transformers” and the end of Marvel's “Civil War” comic event, the summer of 2007 has been drier than the Incredible Hulk's sense of humor.
