Like dropping ecstacy without dropping it

Friday, September 28th, 2007

When Animal Collective last played in Tucson to a sold-out audience at Solar Culture, it seemed as though the members might take off on a kings-of-sound spaceship and never return to Tucson.

After word that the band (originally of Baltimore) recorded its newest and most ridiculously addicting album, Strawberry Jam, in this quaint desert town, of course a show at the Rialto would proceed, and fans anticipated a night of masterfully psychedelic craziness.

Larry the Cable Guy - If you have a “GIT-R-DONE!” bumper sticker on the back of your pickup, this is the place to be tonight. Of course, most fans of comedian Larry the Cable Guy can't read past a second-grade level so this entry is kind of pointless. 7:30 p.

Audiences around the world will unite this week to name the best short film of the year, and Tucson is a part of the fun.

The Loft Cinema will host the 10th Annual Manhattan Short Film Festival tonight. This is the second year the theater has hosted the event, said Jeff Yanc, Loft program director.

The return of the rock musical

Friday, September 28th, 2007

The 1960s are no stranger to American cinema. With all of the memorable events that happened during the decade - the Vietnam War, the Civil Rights movement, the feminist movement and the psychedelic/hippie movement - it's no surprise that the era is a popular one to explore through film.

Festival to benefit All Souls Procession

Friday, September 28th, 2007

La Profesia De La Gitana will present a 1930s themed sideshow and fire show to benefit the All Souls Procession. The event will feature live music, a collaborative performance of over thirty performers and a '30s two-part act with live performers.

“Regarding La Profecia, it's definitely an homage to the classic sideshows of the past.

The Tucson Greek Festival in an hour and a half

Friday, September 28th, 2007

I had plans Friday night to see the Loft's premiere of “Poultrygeist,” the movie in which chicken zombies terrorize a fast-food joint built over an Indian burial ground by cutting off various people's limbs and making a fat man spontaneously combust on the toilet.

Latest 'Resident Evil' suspenseful, but not terrifying

Friday, September 28th, 2007

As if the release of the highly-anticipated “Halo 3″ this past Tuesday wasn't enough to satisfy the wildest fantasies of video game fans, last Friday saw the release of “Resident Evil: Extinction,” the third installment of the movies based on the video game of the same name.

Documentary focuses on policies, not politics

Friday, September 28th, 2007

“No End In Sight” could be one of the most important films you see this year.

The highly acclaimed documentary won the Special Jury Prize at the 2007 Sundance Film Festival and it provides a deeper look into the policies of the United States and their consequences in Iraq.

CD Reviews

After five successful rock albums, the Foo Fighters have come out strong with a sixth, Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace. Listeners can expect the classic loud Foo sound, but with a little '70s style experimentation and new harmonies.

The first song on the album, “The Pretender,” sets the mood perfectly by blasting catchy choruses with loud, raw guitar riffs.

Meaningless Radiohead update:

For the last week, Radiohead has been posting strange codes of box characters with rotating hands on its blog, Dead Air Space. Naturally, obsessive fans are speculating the boxes are lyrics from their long-overdue new album.

Power Up

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away…

…it was established that the ability to make obscure “Star Wars” references qualified someone as a nerd. Also known as “losers,” these people spent a majority of their time in their parents' basements, wasting their lives away in front of the TV screen while battling imaginary foes in a match of “Halo 2.

Punctual dance punk hits Tucson

Friday, September 28th, 2007

It's always interesting to observe a person's reaction when they come across !!! on your iPod.

Puzzled looks are common along with the usual “How do you say that?” Long story short, call them “chk chk chk,” or any other three repeated syllables.

If you think explaining the name as a fan gets old, imagine how it feels for the band.

Poetry and terrorism: A killer combination

Friday, September 28th, 2007

There is a plot to unleash havoc in America in seven days, or so it says on the notes on the men who keep committing suicide in front of the White House. The protagonist of “Samedi the Deafness,” James Sim, a professional mnemonist (person who remembers things), finds himself at the center of this action when he stumbles across a murdered former conspirator and then begins the chase.

UA professor brings trombone talent to Tucson

Friday, September 28th, 2007

Moisés Paiewonsky was disappointed when he was unable to play the trumpet in his middle school band due to the size of his lips.

Now a highly decorated and distinguished trombone player and a new music professor, he is happy about the way things turned out.

'The Big Voice' speaks volumes to audiences

Friday, September 28th, 2007

It's amazing how you can find someone, that significant other, in the most unlikely of circumstances. Who could have known that a Roman Catholic boy from Brooklyn and a Baptist boy from Arkansas would one day meet on a cruise ship in the Atlantic Ocean?

Jim Brochu and Steve Schalchlin never anticipated their chance meeting, their eventual life partnership and the creation of “The Big Voice: God or Merman?” But now they definitely have an inspirational life together and an astounding show that everyone should see in Tucson while they still can.
