It's all in the detail

Friday, September 28th, 2007

OK, so it's Friday night and you have managed to throw together a mediocre outfit. After a battle with a bottle of hairspray and half a tube of mascara, you're starting to look pretty good. Leaving the house for a night of socializing is in your near future.

Like the day you found out Santa didn't exist

Fact: It's hard to translate experimental music into a live show.

Keeping that in mind, last Thursday Animal Collective (the Blink-182 of experimental rock) brought its “live” act to the Rialto. Following Wizard Prison, the band was less than convincing and relied heavily on echo effects and pre-recorded loops.

'Halo 3': Almost perfect

Friday, September 28th, 2007

I lay here dying in the cold snow, with my blood splattered across the barren tundra. Unable to move, trapped inside bulky metal armor, I helplessly watch as my killer, FLUFFY BUNNY 419, stands over me. “Clank, clank, clank.” He repeatedly squats over my corpse, grinding his metal armor against mine in a humping motion to drive home the humiliation. Welcome to the world of “Halo 3. “

I like to dance. It's something that has gotten me dirty looks (Deftones, 2001) and accepting glances (Maroon 5, 2004) at concerts, but it keeps me happy and entertained when I'm separated from my friends in the masses.

You know what I don't like? When I can't dance because 15-year-old boys with body odor are moshing and pushing me into 17-year-old boys with long, greasy, sweaty hair.

Hey, Core staff, try smiling

Friday, September 28th, 2007

There isn't much else worse than getting really excited about something and then finding it pretty freakin' disappointing.

Some cronies from the Arts Desk got juiced to write a good review about Core because it seemed like it couldn't do wrong, but we were sadly mistaken.

Deja vu at the Rialto

Friday, September 28th, 2007

The New Pornographers last visited Tucson in 2005 supporting the then-new album Twin Cinema. Last week when the band came back to town supporting its new release Challengers, it was sadly reminiscent of their last performance.

Last week's show was by no means bad - The New Pornographers write good songs and perform live with an attention to detail.

Fast Facts

Thursday, September 27th, 2007

There is a reference to Superman in every episode of “Seinfeld.” There is a reference to this fact in every edition of “Fast Facts”… Well, okay, it's actually only referenced in this one issue.

Comics

Thursday, September 27th, 2007

Consider today's online comics to be the lo-carb, cholesterol-free, diet-sized selection, with only the core comics you really need: El Jefe Jeff; Giggleville, USA; Merbot; and No Relation.

Police Beat

Thursday, September 27th, 2007

The lesson of today's Police Beat: don't litter, or at least do a better job of making it look like an accident.

Festival to benefit All Souls Procession

Thursday, September 27th, 2007

La Profesia De La Gitana will present a 1930s themed sideshow and fire show to benefit the All Souls Procession. The event will feature live music, a collaborative performance of over thirty performers and a '30s two-part act with live performers.

“Regarding La Profecia, it's definitely an homage to the classic sideshows of the past.

Likeable literature

Friday, September 21st, 2007

Not everyone at the university spends their spare time reading tired textbooks and ho-hum handouts. Many professors have the same tastes in literature as their students. If you've ever been curious about what the people around you are reading, look no further.
