Rhymesayers to invade Tucson

Wednesday, October 31st, 2007

There's more to hip-hop than bitches and buying Bentleys.

Sadly, that's most of what you'll find on MTV and conventional radio. It's this type of content that has turned off many music fans from hip-hop. Due to a few bad eggs, the genre has been stigmatized as stupid and sub-par.

Tucson Symphony Orchestra: Romance & Rachmaninoff - If you just saw “Eastern Promises” and are still interested in Russian fare, you should attend this symphony of Russian composers Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninoff. It might not be as cool as seeing a naked Viggo Mortensen stab two men to death in a sauna, but not much is.

A stunning 'Rendition'

Wednesday, October 31st, 2007

This past weekend at the box office was a lively one, to say the least. A record eight new films were released in Tucson, presenting virtually every moviegoer with an opportunity to see something

of interest.

Regardless of cinematic interests, “Rendition” is a film everyone should see.

'Touch the Names' touches hearts

Wednesday, October 31st, 2007

The Arizona Theatre Company's production of “Touch the Names” is a poignant tribute to the lives lost during the Vietnam War and those individuals still grieving.

'The Nightly News' a triumph

Wednesday, October 31st, 2007

Like Bacitracin on a wound, this comic burns. With “The Nightly News” Jonathan Hickman has created a graphic novel that reinvents storytelling style and carves its own genre. Like “Blade Runner” or “The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test,” the impact of Hickman's creation will be felt for decades to come.

How DJs defused my identity crisis

Wednesday, October 31st, 2007

I was staring at possibly the ugliest mural I had ever seen. It looked like a caricature from the state fair, and it was of two alien people. The man had an unproportionally large football head with brush strokes that resembled a painting at Universal Studios, and the woman looked like the son of Tom Cruise and that crying Christian evangelist with the pink hair.

Josh Ritter ready to take over Plush

Wednesday, October 31st, 2007

Ireland loves Josh Ritter. Now with his recent tour, the singer hopes the U.S. will show him the same kind of affection.

The Idaho native has built a strong fan base outside of the country over the last eight years. Ritter is working hard to expand it throughout his home country on the heels of a new album, released in August.

Venue Vacancy

Wednesday, October 31st, 2007

When Franz Ferdinand, an internationally known rock band notorious for its boisterous live performances, took the Centennial Hall stage in March 2006, something

was missing.

The band members channeled all the energy of a world-class group, but their dynamism seemed trapped inside the stifling walls of the overly formal venue.

Artist channels immigration act

Wednesday, October 31st, 2007

Paco Velez may be an American immigrant from Nogales, Sonora, but in the art world he's a modern-day Renaissance man. Aside from the traditional paintings that have popularized his name, Velez has expanded his reach to the realms of poetry, performance art, sculpture, contemporary installations and, above all, artistic social

commentary.

Same space, different name

Wednesday, October 31st, 2007

Remember that futuristic-looking place on University Boulevard called Bakerzin that specializes in pastries and not much else? Well, the Arts desk can't remember the last time it needed a pastry-only establishment in its life, and it seems the owners of Bakerzin realized that, too.

Catnip

Wednesday, October 31st, 2007

New Dehli has a problem. The capital of India is being overrun by monkeys. Most of the time their attacks range from the occasional bite or snatching a snack from an unsuspecting tourist, but recently the animals have fired the first shot in the looming Man vs.

Scrabble cufflinks are sweet

Wednesday, October 31st, 2007

Some people have great fashion sense without even trying, while others are passionate about fashion finds and deals. The UA is home to so many fashion-forward students - and some even-more-fashionable faculty members. It must spice up any class when the professor wears a cooler outfit

than you.

A pre-Halloween party to dwarf all others

Wednesday, October 31st, 2007

Looking for a horrifically good time? Look no further than Club Congress' eighth annual “Nightmare on Congress Street.” The event promises to be a night of music and mayhem unmatched in Tucson.

“Typically it's the weirdest party around,” said David Slutes, Hotel Congress entertainment director.
