Springtime sun brings skin cancer concerns

Friday, February 29th, 2008

While cancer is not usually associated with college students, information on the relationship between skin cancer and young people suggests that perhaps when students head off to class, they should do so covered with a layer of sunscreen.

Although cancer in college students is less common than the cancer rates for the entire population, there are specific types of skin cancer of which young adults should be aware, said Lee Cranmer, an oncologist at the Arizona Cancer Center.

The sounds of more than 200 middle and high school girls will displace the dull hum of computers in the Manuel T. Pacheco Integrated Learning Center tomorrow.

A rare day, indeed

A 29th day of February exists in the calendar year because it takes the earth approximately 365 days and six hours to revolve around the sun - hence, a 366th day every four years.

Refurbishing the drive-in theater

Friday, February 29th, 2008

I was sitting at The Loft Cinema the other night, chomping on some movie nachos and watching an Oscar-nominated film about a paraplegic fashion editor who writes an entire novel by blinking his eye strategically, when I came up with a great idea.

Or rather, the person sitting next to me, who was also enraptured with “The Diving Bell and the Butterfly,” came up with it and told me later, which inspired me to nobly take the idea for my own and write about it in a column.

Scientific pandering and pigeons

Friday, February 29th, 2008

Samantha Hunt's new novel, “The Invention of Everything Else,” is an interesting mixture of history and fantasy. It is a fictional biography of the last few months of the life of Nikola Tesla, the man who discovered alternating-current electricity, but who was largely overshadowed by Thomas Edison.

Movie fails to 'Step Up 2' its hype

Friday, February 29th, 2008

It must be a dancer thing, but I loved 'Step Up.' The film took two people from completely different backgrounds, both in the dance world and the outside world, and put them together. Unlike many people, I enjoyed the bad acting and the predictable plotline.

Sultan Palace an interesting addition to University

Friday, February 29th, 2008

Walking into Sultan Palace, the new Afghan-inspired restaurant on East University Boulevard, offered an interesting contrast. To the left are standard tables and chairs and a red-painted wall; nothing out of the ordinary. To the right, however, was a Middle Eastern feast for the eyes.

When in doubt, don't wear it out

Friday, February 29th, 2008

Oh yes, our “what not to wear” issue is back and better than ever. I have to say, I had high hopes that UA students had learned their lesson the first couple times around. Overall, we have some very stylish students on campus. Unfortunately, a few people can ruin it for everyone.

And the winner is…

Friday, February 29th, 2008

I think the only reason “No Country for Old Men” won is that “There Will Be Blood” wasn't palatable enough for American audiences. “No Country” was great, but in Oscar-land, guns and fancy haircuts always seem to win over subtlety.

Katzen brings bi-coastal talent to campus

Friday, February 29th, 2008

Next week, the UA School of Music will present a new member of its faculty, and a distinguished one at that. Daniel Katzen, associate professor of horn, came to the UA in August, but has yet to officially settle in; he continues to split his time between Arizona and Boston, where he is completing his 29th year as second horn in the Boston Symphony Orchestra.
