CD Reviews

Counting Crows keep their days of the weekend straight and separate. Saturday nights are heavy, high energy, invincible and even boastful. Sunday mornings are light, reflective, hopeful and sometimes longing for something that isn't there.

Playin' it kool

Monday, March 31st, 2008

It seems intriguing when in your na'veté you agree to do it, but going to a concert for a band you don't know is pretty much always annoying.

It's all right for the first half-hour, even entertaining perhaps, but then your feet start to hurt, someone farts next to you and you can't point out who it is, the songs all begin to run together and you kind of have to go to the bathroom, but can't leave your friends because you'll lose them.

Novellas portray prosaic yet disturbing lives

Monday, March 31st, 2008

Yoko Ogawa's newly translated collection of novellas, “The Diving Pool,” presents three disturbing yet beautiful tales of modern Japan. Ogawa seems to be simultaneously interested in exploring the potential for cruelty in ordinary, even likeable people, and in creating unusual, often olfactory, imagery.
