Can't stop Iraq

Wednesday, May 14th, 2008

The biggest issue of the year has also been the only real issue for half a decade. That, of course, is the Iraq War, which continues to rage with no end in sight five years after its launching, even as hundreds of billions of dollars and more than 4,000 Americans' lives have been sacrificed in vain.

Wednesday, May 14th, 2008

A man was arrested on multiple charges at the UA Main Library, 1510 E. University Blvd., at 8:47 p.m. April 19.

At 8:07 p.m., an officer approached the man at the library regarding theft of his bus pass. He said he was on the first floor of the library and had gone to the bathroom, leaving his wallet in a bag.

Freshman slain in Graham-Greenlee

A dispute between two roommates over a stolen Social Security card, CatCard and $500 led to the murder of Mia Henderson, a biology freshman and resident of the Graham-Greenlee Residence Hall.

Galareka Harrison, a public administration freshman, is accused of stabbing Henderson 21 times after Henderson filed a property theft report against her.

If you still have the cliché triumvirate of words “anything but country” somewhere on your Facebook profile, you might want to reconsider the implications of that statement. This school-year saw musical ravages of human decency in every genre, but also a few visionaries that usurped the claims of their peers.

Recent alumna urges youth to attend college

Wednesday, May 14th, 2008

Many graduating seniors have no immediate clue of where they're going after college, or what they're doing.

Recent alumna Kate Spriggs will be spending the next three years at Carnegie Mellon University, using a prestigious science fellowship to get more middle and high school students into college.

Changing the scope of pharmacy

Wednesday, May 14th, 2008

Larry and Janet McKee always encouraged their children to follow their dreams, and to never quit.

It is a lesson their daughter Megan McKee, a graduating pharmacy student, still takes to heart two decades later.

The advancement of pharmacy begins with the development of willing and able leaders to take the field to new heights.

The Lute-K.O. saga

Kevin O'Neill certainly didn't sign up for this.

Nobody in the program did.

Things weren't quite right from Nov. 4, the morning of the first men's basketball exhibition game, when UA head coach Lute Olson announced he would take an indefinite leave of absence.

Money: That's what UA wants

Wednesday, May 14th, 2008

Tuition will be leaping yet higher next year, while a hiring freeze persists into the summer and the state Legislature has approved a $26 million budget cut, $5.9 million of which is going to be UA's problem. Meanwhile, parking lots - and the home of William and Barbara Kennedy - will be razed to make room for three new residence halls with a combined price tag of $178 million - a tab current dorm dwellers will be picking up thanks to an 8.

Frank Busch, men's and women's swim

Winning two national championships is hard to do, just ask men's basketball head coach Lute Olson.

Trying to win two championships in two weeks is nearly impossible, but that's exactly what Arizona head swim coach Frank Busch was a part of as his men's and women's swim teams delivered the school's 16th and17th national championships after the men's team won its title in Federal Way, Wash.

White (rice) riot

Wednesday, May 14th, 2008

Sordid speculation over Lute Olson's divorce and the preening and pandering of presidential candidates have dominated the news on- and off-campus for months, but the biggest issue of this year is one that's only recently received any attention: the worldwide food shortages that are rapidly becoming a humanitarian crisis.

Men's and women's swim

In a year where virtually every Arizona sport struggled to find a way to get the job done, the Arizona men's and women's swim teams were the polar opposite of that trend.

Both were models of consistency this year as the squads lost a total of one dual meet combined.

Sky high prices for airlines

Wednesday, May 14th, 2008

I'm already sick of the 2008 election, and the news will continue to report every dirty detail of the process until the year is over. Meanwhile, the rising gasoline prices are not only emptying Americans' wallets on land, but also in the air.

All major airlines except for Southwest Airlines have raised their ticket prices and are now charging $25 for checking a second bag in an effort to balance the high fuel bills.

Football vs. Oregon, Nov. 15

It was supposed to be an easy win for Oregon.

The Ducks came in with an 8-1 record and a Heisman Trophy candidate in quarterback Dennis Dixon, who led the charge for as long as he could before tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee and leaving the game in the first quarter.

What you see almost as interesting as what you get

Wednesday, May 14th, 2008

Thousands of students donning caps and gowns will be recognized at commencement Saturday for completing

their degrees.

All graduates will be dressing in navy blue gowns, but each college has its own personal flair of a different colored tassel. On top of those touches, pockets of students have been known to sport their own unique looks.
