Swim squads have Texas two-step on deck

The Wildcats' swim and dive schedule looks like a minefield, and nothing about that will change in Austin, when the men take on No. 1 Texas today and tomorrow while the women race against a third-ranked Longhorns' squad. Arizona's men will also compete against a top-20 Southern Methodist University team in a meet of three teams which already have a good feel for each other.

Shelton hopes for Federal trickle down

The Arizona Legislature has made “questionably quick” movements toward approving a Republican backed plan to solve Arizona's budget deficit. Following the student protest Wednesday at the state capitol, The Associated Press reported that Gov. Jan Brewer called the Arizona Legislature into special session after Republican legislative leaders assured her that they had worked out a plan and had enough votes to get it approved.

The University of Arizona is in a state of upheaval. Students and faculty alike are trying to sort through the complicated web that has brought the university to this moment. Before you can know where you are going, you have to know where you have been. “Starting this fiscal year we took a $22 million cut, basically five percent,” UA President Robert Shelton said.

The UA Solar Decathlon team is hosting a winter formal fundraiser called Decath-O-Prom in an effort to raise money to construct a completely solar powered house that will be entered in the Solar Decathlon Competition.

W-tennis take on tough NAU squad

The Arizona women's tennis team hopes to ride the wave of last weekend's success into Saturday's match against unranked NAU (0-1). The Wildcats (1-0) view the Lumberjacks - a team that succumbed to Arizona State 7-0 on Jan. 24. - as much more of a challenge than their home opener at the Robson Tennis Center, which was a rout of visiting UC-Davis.

Unity Center may combine clubs

UA Student Affairs is considering creating a United Nations of sorts by placing four campus cultural centers, as well as a few social and gender groups, all under one roof. Michelle Perez, director of the UA Center for Student Involvement and Leadership, is the co-chair of a team that has spent the last week talking to students in the clubs that would be combined to make up the new “Unity Center”.

What was the last book you read? The last book I read was, “Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World,” by Haruki Murakami. What is that book about? It's two different stories meshed into one. One's like a fantasy world and the other involves a computer tech geek who's being chased around and eventually the stories mesh together.

Aphasia subject of UA research project

Research projects at the UA are treating individuals with a disease that strips people of speech and memory after they suffer traumatic head injuries. Pelagie Beeson, professor of speech, language and hearing, said aphasia is defined as the loss of ability to understand or express speech.

Club baseball kicks off season in L.A.

After a highly-successful inaugural season in 2008, the Arizona Club Baseball team will open this season with one goal in mind - to be better. But it won't be easy for a team that finished seventh in the country last season. The Wildcats will open their 2009 season against USC with a three-game series in Los Angeles this weekend, and although they didn't play the Trojans in the regular season last year, that doesn't mean the team is apprehensive going into its season-opening road trip.
