UA readies for swine flu threat

The first reported case of swine flu in Arizona has prompted UA officials to review emergency plans in case the disease makes its way to campus. Vice President for Student Affairs Melissa Vito sent an urgent e-mail to university departments Wednesday detailing how the UA should prepare itself for the possibility of swine flu.

On Tuesday the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) listed the number of confirmed U.S. swine flu cases at 71. In addition, countries around the world, including Canada, Israel, New Zealand, Spain and Scotland, are beginning to confirm their own cases of swine flu.

The Arizona Students Association and the Associated of Students of the University of Arizona have been working all semester to protect the interests of students, and they hope to stage one last rally against the proposed tuition surcharge the Arizona Board of Regents will vote on today.

M-golf finishes ninth at Pac-10s

The men's golf team wrapped up the Pacific 10 Conference Championships Wednesday afternoon in Seattle, Wash., and the finish for the Wildcats was far from what they had hoped for: a disappointing ninth place. Despite shooting a score of 7-over-par 363 on Wednesday in the fourth and final round, a vast improvement from their first two rounds in which they shot a combined 29-over-par, the Wildcats didn't have enough to push forward in the tournament.

Graffiti often artistic, but shouldn't be used to vandalize property I have noticed around the outskirts of Tucson a growing amount of newly-added graffiti, near Sixth Street, on building walls and sidewalks. I first noticed this a few weeks ago when I was walking to my friend's house off Park Street.

Not 'batty' for rabies

Bats are commonly used in horror films to make a dark night even spookier. In reality, these creatures tend to leave humans alone, but they do pose a threat in transmitting rabies. The UA, in collaboration with the Arizona Department of Game and Fish and the Arizona Department of Health Services, created the Batty about Bats guide to educate the public about rabies exposure and bat conservation.

About 12,000 spectators flowed into the stadium Wednesday night to watch what Associated Students of the University of Arizona officials are calling one of the best concerts the university has hosted.

Zane Johnson requests transfer from UA

UA wing Zane Johnson requested to transfer from the Arizona men's basketball team and expects to be granted a release from his scholarship. Johnson met with newly hired UA head coach Sean Miller on Tuesday to discuss his intentions. He was checked academically, leaving UA athletics director Jim Livengood without issues for the release.

What is your favorite elementary school memory? I would have to say fifth grade. We had this thing called “Field Day” and it was like the last day of school where everyone just kind of plays and me and my buddies decided to bring balloons to school. We were troublemakers and we decided to fill all of the balloons up with water and we ran through the halls and we had a water balloon fight in the hallways and in the classrooms and we hit our teachers and everything.
