Arizona softball inks World Series bid

Never count the Arizona Wildcat softball team out.

After tying the three-game series at one apiece, Arizona starting pitcher Sarah Akamine (22-7) was pulled in the first inning of game three without a single out, a troubling sign for the Wildcats, who had seen their 3-0 lead close to 3-2.

Arizona's offensive surge has been unmatched this season thanks in large part to the number of home runs they have blasted. The Wildcats lead the nation in batting average, home runs, scoring and slugging percentage.

Leading Arizona State by 48 home runs in the race for home run lead and breaking the single season home run record of 126, Arizona is putting up major numbers.

Wildcats drop game one in Super Regionals

In Palo Alto, Calif., No. 9 seed Arizona softball dropped their first game in NCAA Super Regional competition yesterday against No.8 seed Stanford. The nationally televised game, which ended in a 6-4 Arizona loss, was close for much of the contest, but Wildcat defensive errors spoiled their early lead in a costly fifth inning.

They've made it to the big top. And now the circus begins. The No. 9 seed Arizona Wildcat softball team begins play in their 21st Women's College World Series Thursday against No. 1 seed Florida. The first game of the WCWS is sure to please as power versus power when Arizona's bats and World Series experience face off against Florida's pitching.

In Palo Alto, Calif., the Arizona Wildcats forced game three in the Stanford Super Regional after defeating the Cardinal 7-3.

In a game where Arizona was the designated home team, the Wildcats were able to limit their errors and take advantage of Stanford's mistakes to keep hopes of returning to the Women's College World Series alive.

Arizona softball doesn't want its 21st appearance at the Women's College World Series to be just that - an appearance. Last year the Wildcats lost the first two games of the tournament, falling at the hands of UCLA and Alabama. This year, the task does not get easier for Arizona.

UA associate head coach Mike Dunlap turned down the opportunity to fill Lute Olson's shoes after the head coach's sudden retirement, leaving UA athletic director Jim Livengood in an embarrassing situation. Not only did the second-in-command turn down the job, but Russ Pennell, a first-year assistant, was next in line to take control of the downward-spiraling program.

In today's economy, it's no secret that post-graduation life includes the concern of ending up using the back of your diploma to write down latte orders at a corner Starbucks. Employers expect to hire 22 percent fewer college graduates from the class of 2009 than were hired in 2008.
