X, Y and DMZ

by

The fall comic season is getting off to a huge start this year as the hangover from summer begins to wear off. Some of the best series have begun releasing trade paperbacks, and authors are getting their first chance to test their ability, with new series and adaptations hitting store shelves on a regular basis.

Lavender Diamond shines a light on peace and love

by

You may remember Lavender Diamond as one of the weirdest opening bands you've ever seen.

The eccentric, Los Angeles-based group visited Tucson in October 2006 opening for geek rockers The Decemberists. Many of the concert's attendees were taken aback by the beautiful vocals from and wacky persona of singer Becky Stark.

KFMA delivered quite the 'Ball'

by

Around 8:30 p.m. Sunday the headlining Smashing Pumpkins began to rock the stage at KFMA's Fall Ball.

Thousands screamed and surged toward the stage as drummer Jimmy Chamberlain pounded the drum intro to “United States.” The intensity doubled as vocalist and guitarist Billy Corgan joined the barrage slamming away at the opening chords to the song, stomping with each strum.

Styles for going out on the town

by

Weekend events allow students to dress to the nines. Despite visible g-strings and the occasional basketball jersey, UA students rely on chic yet comfortable outfits for the weekend's festivities.

House parties, concerts, sporting events and bars see an array of fashionable UA men and women when the school week comes to an end and homework is no longer the topic of conversations.

Ways to make comics appeal to chicks

by

I read a comic book for the first time ever this week. It wasn't about Batman or villainesses with big tits or anything like that. It was about the life and times of Scrooge McDuck. I suspect the neighbor's cat dragged it in when it arrived to take its weekly crap by the couch, but nevertheless, I gave the book a chance.

Jose Solorzano, a support systems analyst, usually spends his weekdays traversing the Arizona Health Sciences Library.

Solorzano's weekends consist of focusing on his true passion: the piano.

Born in Agua Prieta, Sonora, Mexico, Solorzano has embraced music since he was 10 years old and realized that he could “pick up tunes” by simply listening.

Spanish cuisine es muy bien

by

I began to realize that Spain was completely different than Tucson when I had the most human of urges: hunger. One of the most noticeable differences between Spanish and American customs is the type of food people eat and when they eat it.

In Spain, everyone eats their meals at home, and they get drinks or tapas (appetizers) in cafes.

Bilingual poetry crosses borders

In hopes of creating cross-cultural conversation, Borderlands Theater and the Phoenix Art Museum have come together to present a special poetry reading.

Sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts, the reading and Q-and-A session will be hosted by The Loft Cinema, 3233 E.

'Land' reveals unexpected Lincoln uproar

by

Andrew Ferguson was puzzled. The long-time journalist had always assumed that of all the safe, dull subjects in America, Abraham Lincoln was the safest and dullest.

Yet here he was at the grand opening of a Lincoln statue in Richmond, Va., and protesters surrounded him.
